Nintendo president Kimishima Tatsumi said something odd in a recent interview: according to Kimishima, the company’s upcoming NX console is not a successor to the Wii U.
Instead, he he told Japanese publication Asasi, the NX will be sold alongside the Wii U and the 3DS.
But less than a month ago, Kimishima said that the Wii U could seize production by Fiscal 2018, which starts in March 2017, about the time the NX launches.
It’s a very weird comment made by the president, and it could be a misunderstanding, as it makes no sense to keep selling the Wii U. Demand is way down, as evidenced by the sales numbers and Nintendo’s lack of software: they have just two games lined up for the console in 2016 (Mario & Sonic At The Olympics and Pokemon), and just one game for 2017 (Zelda).
Nintendo did sell the original Wii alongside the Wii U, but there was still a demand for the Wii, especially in emerging markets.
Kmishima was also asked about the specs and launch price of the NX, but declined to comment. The last report we saw regarding the NX hardware suggested that it would not use an x86 CPU like the PS4 and Xbox One.
