Nintendo has been hemorrhaging money since it introduced the first Nintendo 3DS way back in 2010. The company blundered through that launch but recovered, only to blunder through the Wii U launch. Nintendo still hasn’t recovered from these failures, but at least the company is reporting an annual profit this year, rather than a loss. While net sales of hardware and software is down from what the company expected, both operating income and net income are above expectations.
- Net Sales: ¥549.780 billion yen (↓)
- Operating Income: ¥24.770 billion yen (↑)
- Net Income: ¥41.843 billion yen (↑)
In terms of hardware and software, the Wii U still continues to struggle, but at least Nintendo is acknowledging that fact. The Nintendo 3DS has outsold Wii U hardware by a factor of three, while software sales are off the charts as well. 3DS hardware sales have fallen dramatically, while Wii U hardware sales have remained pretty much level. Despite the fall in 3DS sales, software sales are up, while software sales for the Wii U are down over expectations. Still, the guidance plan and results are very close, so Nintendo has gotten better at estimating its software sales over the course of the year.
Hardware & Software Guidance FY15:
- 3DS HW: 9 million
- Wii U HW: 3.6 million
- 3DS SW: 61 million
- Wii U SW: 25 million
Hardware & Software Results FY15:
- 3DS HW: 8.73 million (↓)
- Wii U HW: 3.38 million
- 3DS SW: 62.74 million (↑)
- Wii U SW: 24.440 million (↓)
Perhaps the most interesting piece of information from the report is that Super Smash Bros. for 3DS outsold Super Smash Bros. for Wii U by nearly twice the number. The 3DS version managed to move 6.75 million units of software, while the Wii U version only moved 3.65 in roughly the same time period.
