Zelda: Breath of the Wild was the first game in the series to feature an open-world design, and the game was a massive success party because of that decision — it’s the biggest Zelda game to date.
And this will now be the standard for Zelda games going forwards. That’s according to Zelda series director Eiji Aonuma, who recently spoke to Famitsu about the future of Zelda and open world game design.
“In the future, open air games will be the standard for Zelda.” said Aonuma, using the phrase “open air” instead of “open world” (but the meaning remains the same).
The open world design in Breath of the Wild wasn’t without criticism from some players, who complained that there wasn’t enough to do in the game, and that there were too few dungeons.
Despite all that, Zelda: Breath of the Wild remains one of the best in the series, and is also one of the best reviewed games of all time.
