Over the past few weeks, we’ve gotten plenty of tweets and emails from Nintendo fans asking us to post about the current petition to have Nintendo remove region-locking from both the Wii U and the 3DS. As of the time of writing, the petition needs under 1,000 signatures, but that won’t matter as Nintendo has finally issued a statement on region-locking and why it will stay in place.
“Nintendo has no plans to remove region locking from our systems. By taking this approach, Nintendo is able to include parental controls and ensure compliance with regional standards and rating systems.”
This will understandably upset some of you who have been campaigning for this since Microsoft did a 180 on its own DRM policies, announcing that the Xbox One will no longer be region locked and will not require a 24 hour check-in or restrict used games. Nintendo fans took to Miiverse to express their support for region-free gaming, hoping Nintendo would answer.
