Nintendo will not discuss the NX or smart device announcements at E3

Earlier this year when Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced that the company would be breaking into the mobile market with DeNA as a partner, he briefly made mention that Nintendo is still developing a home console successor to the Wii U called the NX. This was done to assuage any fears that Nintendo would abandon the home console market and focus primarily on the mobile market. Despite that, many have been speculating on whether or not Nintendo will discuss the NX at all during E3 this year.

Iwata has remained firm that his company is not ready to talk about the successor to the Wii U and the 3DS until 2016. In a recent investor’s meeting, Iwata reiterated that the company will not be discussing the console at E3 because the system is not designed as a simple replacement for the Wii U, but rather Nintendo is working on a new system from the ground up. Here’s the relevant quote from the investor’s meeting:

We do not plan on talking specifics about the the NX until 2016.

Presently, we cannot talk about the time period when it [the NX] will go on sale or what it’s like, because we are calling it a ‘new concept,’ we are not thinking of this as a ‘simple replacement’ for the 3DS or the Wii U..

That puts any new NX announcements off the table for June and at least another year dedicated to the Wii U. What do you think? Is Nintendo finally embracing the idea that their latest console should be competitive with Xbox and PlayStation, instead of offering something new? Let us know in the comments!
