When Nintendo revealed the Wii U, they filed a bunch of trademarks around the world, as it’s expected. When they got those trademarks approved, they expected it would be easy to get the WiiU.com domain name. But apparently, it wasn’t that easy.
Nintendo filed a “cybersquatting” dispute with World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), where they wanted to take over the domain from the current owner. However, the domain was registered long before the Wii U was revealed — in fact, long before the original Wii was revealed.
Now WIPO has ruled against Nintendo, saying the original WiiU.com owner can keep the domain.
To make matters even more interesting, the domain was actually on sale right before Nintendo filed the complaint. They could have simply bought the domain, which would have probably been cheaper than paying all those lawyers to try and take it by force.
