Nintendo has high hopes for the Switch, and judging by sales so far, the console is off to a very good start.
Before the Switch launched, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima said that he expects the Switch to sell 100 million units, just as many as the Wii.
We thought he was crazy for believing that, but his opinion hasn’t changed. In fact, he now believes that the Switch will sell 110 million units — 10 million more than the Wii, the best-selling Nintendo console of all time.
Not only that, he recently told Japanese investors that he thinks the Switch will sell 20 million units during its first year (although he previously commented that they were going to ship 18 million during this year).
And so far, the numbers are on his side: the Switch sold 1.5 million units during launch and has been selling so well that the company has doubled Switch production to meet demand.
However, five years ago, Kimishima also believed that Nintendo would sell 100 million Wii U consoles. We all know how that turned out…
