The NES Classic was sold out during its entire 6-month production run, as Nintendo greatly underestimated its demand. And they’ve continuously told us that they have learned a lesson and will increase production of the follow up console, the SNES Classic.
Now they’ve doubled down on those remarks, as Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime recently said that the company has “dramatically increased production” of the SNES Classic, and added this little bit in an interview with Financial Times (sub required):
“I would strongly urge you not to over-bid on an SNES Classic on any of the auction sites. You shouldn’t have to pay more than $79.99.”
It seems that Nintendo is pretty confident that they’ll have enough units, but they’ve miscalculated both the NES Classic and Switch consoles in the past.
Which is why we’re taking Nintendo’s words with a grain of salt this time — hopefully there will be enough units, but one should never underestimate demand for a new Nintendo console.
