2014 was a big year for Nintendo. Not just because of several high profile Wii U titles (Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, Super Smash Bros etc.) which resulted in increased sales, but also because the company utterly dominated the Japanese games sales chart.
Japanese publication Famitsu recently released their list of the top 100 best selling games in Japan in 2014, and the list is dominated by Nintendo platforms. In fact, of the top 10 best selling games in Japan in 2014, 8 were 3DS titles and the remaining 2 were Wii U titles.
Of the 100 best selling games in Japan in 2014, 40 were 3DS titles, while the Wii U managed to get 10 games on the list. Which means that half of the games on the list were on Nintendo platforms. The rest of the games were mostly split between the PS3 and Vita. The PS4 only accounted for just 8 games out of 100. There was not a single Xbox 360 or Xbox One game on the list, which doesn’t come as a huge surprise.
As the list below shows, the top 50 were mostly on Nintendo platforms, while the bottom 50 were mostly on Sony platforms.
Nintendo was also the top publisher in Japan in 2014. Here’s the complete list of the top 100 best selling games in Japan in 2014. Notice how many games we’ve never heard of in the West. “Battle For Money Sentouchuu”? “Attack on Titan: The Last Wings of Mankind”? How about “Love Live! School Idol Paradise”?
