While we got some information on how the Amiibo system works in the Nintendo Direct that aired today, the bulk of the information was geared toward the differences in the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U version. Thankfully Nintendo has released a brand new trailer that showcases the concept of the Amiibos a little bit better, as well as showing off some of the features of Smash, like 8 player Smash.
