There have been rumors for months now that Nintendo has discontinued production of the popular NES Classic Edition, aka the NES Mini. And now the company has confirmed that this is indeed happening: the last shipment of NES Classic consoles to North America will happen later this month.
And that’s it — no more NES Classic consoles. Ever. Which means that those expensive consoles listed on eBay will only go up in price.
Nintendo said in a statement that the console was never meant to to in production for long. In fact, they kept it in production for longer than they anticipated due to the massive demand. They added:
“We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product.”
But apparently not enough to increase production to meet demand. The console has been sold out ever since it launched, and Nintendo greatly miscalculated demand for it.
If you managed to get one, good for you. If not, then chances of finding a console at MSRP ($60) are incredibly small now.
Despite several reports about production discontinuation, Nintendo dismissed all of those rumors just two months ago.
