Miyamoto discusses the Sony Mario Movie leak

Miyamoto-Mario

When Sony Pictures was hacked and hackers released several email conversations from the company online, one of the more interesting revelations was that the studio was speaking to Nintendo about the possibility of creating a Mario movie. The emails leaked had the contact who seemingly brokered the deal with Nintendo positive that it would go forward. Sadly, Shigeru Miyamoto squashed that notion today after being asked about the leak.

Miyamoto mentions that nearly every year they are approached by a studio asking to make a Mario movie and that while they entertain some ideas, he isn’t exactly sure when Mario will appear in film again.

I heard something about that this morning. What’s interesting is that over the past 20 years, people come to us on a fairly regular basis about creating “Mario” movies. There are times that those ideas end right when they bring them to us, and other times we’ll listen to presentations. It’s not very unusual, and it’s something we’ve been doing for a very long time. I don’t particularly have a vision that the next iteration of “Mario” is going to be in film.

It looks like that film may not be in the works after all, or if it was, Nintendo is downplaying it thanks to the leak.
