Minecraft on Switch is the definitive, mobile version

Earlier today, Microsoft streamed Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition in what was the first extensive look we’ve had at the game. We’re gonna stop for a second to point out how weird it is that Microsoft streamed a Switch game. It’s the end of days, ladies and gentlemen.

Anywho, the stream revealed quite a bit of info that we didn’t already know. For one, we now know that the world of Minecraft on the Switch is about “medium” sized. In terms of actual measurements, the world is about 3072 x 3072. To put that into perspective, the PS4 and Xbox One versions are 5120 x 5120 and Vita, Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii U are the lowest of the bunch at 864 x 864. So, unless you want to play Minecraft on the PC or a PS4/Xbox One, you’re getting the best version with the Switch.

The team at 4J Studios is working on a way to transfer your world from the Wii U version to the Nintendo Switch, but that won’t be available in time for the game’s launch on May 11th.

As for updates, which are pretty important for Minecraft, the developers say the Switch version will launch with January’s update. From there, they’ll work on getting it caught up to the current version.

And finally, the Switch version runs at 60 fps!

Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition launches on May 11th via the Nintendo Switch eShop for $29.99. A retail version will be available at a later date.
