Nintendo took to Twitter today to announce the release date for Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics, but curiously enough the announcement was only for the Nintendo 3DS version of the game.

A post on Facebook announcing the Marc 18th release date for the Nintendo 3DS version of the game did mention the Wii U version, but only states that it is coming at a later date, rather than releasing simultaneously. Perhaps Nintendo is waiting until the Olympic games are in full swing to release the title?
