Mario Kart 8 has having the intended sales boost affect Nintendo hoped it would, according to Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. Wii U sales for the week after the game’s release were quadruple the previous few weeks, with around 18% of current Wii U owners purchasing the game within its first weekend.
It’s one of the things I have to do with certain media, remind them, look, for us, the drive toward the holiday began a couple of weeks ago with Mario Kart 8. And that’s off to a fantastic start. For us, on a global basis, and certainly here in the United States, it’s driving hardware, which is great to see.
It should be noted that this also includes the Wii U Mario Kart 8 bundle sales, so first time Wii U owners are counted in the number if they decided to pick up the bundle. Mario Kart 8 topped 1 million sales within the release weekend, meaning its currently the fastest selling Wii U game to date.
