Mario Kart 8 Deluxe outsells Zelda: Breath of the Wild in Japan

Well here’s a surprising sales statistic coming from the land of the rising sun: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold more copies in Japan than Zelda: Breath of the Wild. You know, the best-reviewed game in years and probably the best Zelda game ever?

That’s according to the latest sales numbers from Japan, where Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is now the best-selling Switch game. Not only has Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold more copies, it also launched later than Breath of the Wild.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold 501,614 units so far, compared to “just” 460,480 for Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

The third best selling Switch game to date is 1-2 Switch, which sold just over 200,000 units in Japan.

This is quite surprising, as Zelda: Breath of the Wild has received universal acclaim worldwide, and is so far the best selling Switch game in the US and Europe. But in Japan, apparently gamers are more interested in Mario Kart right now.

As of May 1, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold over 1 million units worldwide, half of that coming from Japan.

Here are the top 5 best selling Switch games in Japan so far:

  1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (501,614)
  2. Zelda: Breath of the Wild (460,480)
  3. 1-2 Switch (200,807)
  4. ARMS (154,845)
  5. Super Bomberman R (92,112)
