Japanese sales: Wii U sees slight rise as PS4 dethrones 3DS this week

Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan.

While Japan’s top twenty list continues to be dominated by Nintendo 3DS titles, PlayStation 3’s Dragon Quest Heroes continued at the top of the charts, followed by the newly released Etrian Mystery Dungeon sandwiched just before the PlayStation 4 version of Dragon Quest Heroes. It’s interesting to see the adoption rates between the two consoles, as the PS3 version sold nearly double what the PS4 version did. I think that’s plenty proof that people in Japan just haven’t seen the need to upgrade their home consoles from the last generation.

Evolve launched in Japan this week as well, with only 16k sold on PS4 during the launch week. To find Wii U games we need to look further down the chart, where Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. have been falling steadily over the course of the past few weeks. Still, it’s not hard to see that Japan is still dominated by the Nintendo 3DS, even if the PlayStation brand continues with new releases.

Here’s a look at software charts this week with total lifetime sales of the title followed in parentheses.
