Japanese sales: Wii U outsells PlayStation 4 this week

Despite the chart by Famitsu yesterday showcasing how handheld and console gaming is declining in Japan year over year, this week Nintendo has a lot to be proud of in terms of both software and hardware sales. Of the top ten titles sold this week, eight of the top ten were dominated by Nintendo, with two of those being Wii U titles.

Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U continues to sell well, with another 85k sold this week bringing the total sold up to 471k sold. Remember yesterday that 2014 year over year sales for the Wii U showed that around 600k were sold this year in Japan, which means Super Smash Bros. has almost reached the total Wii U adoption rate this year in Japan. Aside from that, both Mario Kart 8 and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker continue to chart.

Perhaps the most interesting piece of information from this is that the Wii U continues to have a sales rise, this week managing to outsell every other home console on the market at 43k moved. That’s an increase over last week and 10k more than the PlayStation 4, which is the closest competing home console in range. In fact, the only console to outsell the Wii U this week was the Nintendo 3DS and it’s LL variant, but that’s to be expected considering the mobile-focused nature of Japan.
