Japanese sales: Wii U continues its upswing

Here’s a look at the sales numbers in Japan this week, marking the third consecutive week of Mario Kart 8 being available on the market. The game itself has dropped in sales numbers significantly, showing most Japanese gamers picked it up when it first became available. Nevertheless it was able to retain its top position on the software chart with 42k sales, down from nearly 440k the week previous. As we move into the Mario Kart 8 long-tail of availability, the interesting question will be if Wii U sales continue to remain steady.

Over the previous weeks between the release of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and Mario Kart 8, the Wii U sales figures managed to stay stable at around 7k to 8k units every week. This week the Wii U continues to top the ten thousands with 12k sold, though it’s down from the previous week’s high of 14k. Either way, it’s nice to see the Wii U continuing to gain some traction for this release, with the next biggest release on the horizon Hyrule Warriors, which will likely be extremely popular in Japan.
