Japanese sales: Super Smash Bros takes top spot, Wii U sales surge

Today marks the first full week of sales we’ve seen since Super Smash Bros. for Wii U released in Japan. The game managed to take the top spot, knocking Pokemon OR/AS down to second place after a short week at the top. Mario Kart 8 moved up several places as well, formerly hanging around the number 15 on the charts. This week it managed to climb to number 11 with 20k sold, bringing the total number of sales for that title to over 750k in Japan alone.

The big win here is for the Wii U, which saw a significant jump in sales thanks to the release of Super Smash Bros. Sales for the Wii U have been ramping up in preparation for the release, with last weeks sales topping out at 14k. This week, the Wii U managed to add an additional 10k to that number, bringing in a total of 24k sales. Hopefully we’ll see these sales numbers continue as we move into the holiday sale season and more people begin to adopt systems in order to experience Wii U Smash.

Despite the uptick in Wii U sales, the home console wasn’t able to dethrone the new Nintendo 3DS model in Japan, but it did manage to claim the best-selling home console in the country for the week which is an accomplishment in itself.
