Japanese sales: Smash Bros continues to dominate, Wii U sales still up

The software and hardware sales for Nintendo in Japan are now available and despite a few new releases that took top position on the charts, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U continues to sell extremely well at number four on the charts. Last week nearly 80k were sold, but the recently released Yokai Watch 2: Shinuchi managed to dethrone both Smash and Pokemon from their previously held top spots with over 1.2 million sold in release week. Japan is really crazy about Level 5’s new ghost-hunting RPG.

This week also marked the availability of GTA V on PS4 in Japan, which managed to claim the third spot in the software charts, selling 80k in its first week of availability. This also propelled PS4 sales in Japan to the second spot on the chart. It will be interesting to see how well those sells continue, considering how quickly Western games usually fall off the charts in Japan.

In terms of hardware, the New 3DS LL model remains king, while the Wii U sold a respectable 27k. That’s a far cry from the 8k we’ve seen in weeks before Super Smash Bros., so we hope these sales will continue to stay up as we move past the holiday season.
