Japanese sales: Pokemon on top, Wii U sales still middling

Pokemon-Omega-Ruby-and-pokemon-alpha-sapphire

This week saw the release of Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire in Japan, with both games topping the charts for the week. Both games combined have sold nearly 1.3 million in their week since release, showing that the Nintendo 3DS and Pokemon are still strong in Japan, despite newer games like Yokai Watch using a similar formula. In fact, Pokemon is still so popular in Japan that the Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire double pack managed to chart second, with nearly 100k units sold.

What’s surprising is that Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker charts at 10 on the charts, while Mario Kart 8 hangs on at 15. From there Bandai Namco has a new Wii U game release in Japan that charted at 11 and surprisingly, Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U is no where to be found in the top 20 (whoops it comes out next week!), despite selling record numbers of copies in America when it debuted last week.

Despite this, the Wii U has still managed to sell 9k this week, which is still double the 4k number we saw only a few weeks ago before the release of Super Smash Bros. and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Either way Nintendo is winning with the Nintendo 3DS in Japan and the Super Smash Bros. sales in America, so we can’t say we’re too sad to see the Wii U only performing mediocre in Japan this week.
