Japanese sales for 2/17 – 2/23

Kojima-PS4-Launch-Event-Japan-6

Last week the PlayStation 4 launched in Japan, dominating the sales charts. The console sold 309k units its first week in its home country and of course all other hardware took a dip because of it. It’s interesting to note that the PS4 seems to be going toe-to-toe with the Wii U in terms of launch numbers, as the Wii U sold similarly during its initial holiday rush.

Four of the top ten software sales were for the newly launched PS4, and the newest Wii U title, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze slipped to 12 spot with sales of 14k after a launch week sales of 50k. It seems like the PlayStation 4 is currently taking over Japan, but it will be interesting to see if Sony’s new console can keep this momentum in the next few weeks.

In terms of Wii U numbers, despite the release of the PlayStation 4, the Wii U has held steady at 8k week over week.
