Square Enix has revealed that they have an “ongoing discussion” with Nintendo about bringing their MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV to the Switch. The game was originally launched back in 2010 on the PC, and recently got a new expansion, “Stormblood”.
The developer/publisher is currently negotiating to bring the game to the Switch and Xbox One, but as producer Naoki Yoshida says, they have one specific requirements from Nintendo and Microsoft:
“I have proposed a condition every time I speak with any platform manufacturers. It’s that the game has to have the capability of cross-platform play”, said Yoshida.
Which shouldn’t be hard to do, because both Nintendo and Microsoft are open to cross play: Rocket League will support PC/Switch/Xbox One cross-play, and so will Microsoft’s Minecraft in the future. Only Sony refuses to join the party.
Final Fantasy XIV launched in 2010 and was universally panned by critics, but it has improved a lot since then and has a solid playerbase right now. It’ll be interesting to see if it can thrive on the Switch console.
