FIFA 18 on Switch looks like the best mobile FIFA game ever

EA is showcasing FIFA 18 on the Switch at E3, and what we’ve seen so far makes it look like the best mobile FIFA game ever.

While FIFA 18 on the Switch isn’t the full current-gen experience — it’s missing some features and isn’t based on the Frostbite game engine — it’s running smooth on the console and offers the same FIFA gameplay as you’d get on home consoles.

FIFA 18 Nintendo Switch

EA Sports has been trying for a while to bring the FIFA experience to the portable market, both with iOS and Android versions, and with more powerful PlayStation Vita and 3DS versions.

But FIFA 18 on the Switch is the first time the game actually looks and plays like a FIFA game. It doesn’t have the latest bells and whistles as the PS4 and Xbox One versions do, but you can play it on the go and get close to the same experience as on a home console.

We had some reservations about FIFA 18, given how it appeared to be a stripped down version of the game that’s based on older technology. But when it comes to the actual gameplay, it should satisfy any soccer fan out there — it’s the best mobile FIFA game ever.

The game won’t include the popular Journey mode on the Switch, but it will include the Ultimate Team mode and most of the other modes that are present in PS4 and Xbox One editions of the game.

And when it comes to the technology under the hood, EA insists that everything is custom — it’s a brand new game engine designed specifically for the Nintendo Switch and runs the game at 60 frames per second. And we can definitely attest to that: the game runs smooth with no framerate drops.

We’ll have more coverage of FIFA 18 at E3 later this week. The game will be coming to the Switch and other platforms on September 29, 2017.
