Nintendo: Classic Games Selection and Virtual Console are different

Yesterday evening, Nintendo dropped a bombshell on us in the form of the Classic Games Selection. Though the Big N hasn’t decided on if this is the final name for the service, they do know that this is different from the Virtual Console service we’ve shelled out money for since the early days of the Nintendo Wii.

In an interview with Famitsu, a Nintendo representative also clarified that they’re not sure what their plans are for the Virtual Console on the Nintendo Switch. That’s not to say that the service won’t make its way to the Switch, just that right now the Classic Games Selection is what we have to look forward to.

From what we understand, the Classic Games Selection is a Netflix-like offering of classic games with added online features from Nintendo. The selection will begin with a few NES titles, but Nintendo has stated that they’re not ruling out bringing SNES games to the service in the future.

For now, the Classic Games Collection will be available sometime next year along with the Nintendo Switch’s paid online service. You can read more on that here.
