Chrome Drops Support For Google Gears

Google launched Google Gears in 2007 as a way to speed up your web experience by downloading many elements of websites to your local computer. Although Google discontinued Gears last year in an effort to move the benefits of Gears into HTML5 and support them with Chrome instead, Chrome 10 and 11 still supported Google Gears. That will change with Chrome 12.

Google has just announced that Chrome 12, which is currently in Beta, will not have support for Google Gears. Instead they’ll be launching the same features offered from within Chrome through the capabilities found in HTML5. And guess what? ALL browsers can take advantage of HTML5 so everyone has a reason to be excited that Google keeps not only pushing their company forward, but also standards like HTML5.
