ASUS made a bit of a weird move when it announced the ASUS Chromebox, a device category we haven’t seen in a while. It was exciting to see ASUS coming into the Chrome OS market, so we thought there definitely had to be something else in the works. Today we find out ASUS is not only working on a Chromebook, they are getting ready to launch two of them!
In an earnings call, ASUS mentions they are planning to launch 2 Chromebooks in the coming quarter. One would feature an 11.6-inch display and cost $199, while the larger one would measure in at 13.3 inches and cost $249.
Other specs are still anyone’s guess, but we can assume these laptops will have a Haswell processor (like the Chromebox). Other specs should be standard: 2-4 GB of RAM, nice battery life and probably 16 GB of internal storage. We will have to wait more and see, though!
It’s also interesting to hear ASUS accept that they have to hit other markets because laptops and computers continue to go downhill. This is certainly true. Computers have been suffering since the growth of smart devices and Chrome OS started skyrocketing. I know people who don’t own a device with a “full OS” (Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, etc.)
Maybe we will learn more about these during CES, and you can be sure we will be there to catch it all. ASUS is a good computer manufacturer, so I am really looking forward to seeing what their Chromebooks will be like.
