Earlier this month we shared information that the UK retailer Asda, a Walmart-owned supermarket chain in the UK, slashed the prices of its Wii U stock to £149.99 and £199.99 for Wii U basic and deluxe models. Now it appears that this fire sale of sorts on the stock was to stop stocking Wii U SKUs at all. In addition, reports have stated that Asda did not stock Pikmin 3 either. Asda confirmed the drop to CVG:
“Asda continues to offer customers a selection of Wii U games and accessories through Asda Direct, but these ranges are currently not on offer in Asda shops. Asda will stock [Wii U] games on a title by title merit basis as they come along through Asda Direct. We will continue to support Nintendo as a format holder partner.”
When Nintendo was asked for a comment on the matter, the company stated it was aware of Asda’s decision, but that it doesn’t comment on specific practices with business partners. This is terrible news for those in the UK who might want to get a Wii U, as now specialty shops like GAME will be one of the last remaining places to get one immediately instead of waiting for online delivery.
