Amiibo pre-orders for January and February are already sold out

Nintendo’s amiibos might be more popular than even Nintendo dreamed. We’ve already got our first wave of amiibos available with the second wave due imminently, but third and fourth wave amiibos are already sold out at some retailers. These amiibo waves aren’t scheduled to be released until January and February so it’s possible we’ll see pre-orders re-open, but the fact that we’re two months away from release for some of them and they’re already sold out spells huge success for Nintendo.

It also spells a huge problem. If Nintendo can’t keep up with amiibo demand, it’s likely that some people who are interested in the Wii U and amiibo system for Super Smash Bros. and other games may pass on the opportunity if they find they’re not able to get all of the accessories they want with the game.

Currently sold out figures include King Dedede, Meta Knight, and Shulk in the Nintendo UK store. In the US, Meta Knight is exclusive to Best Buy and pre-orders are still open for him. In the second wave, nearly all of the figures have sold out on Amazon, with a “sign up to be notified” message displayed when you try to pre-order one. This holds true for nearly all figures, which means more people are pre-ordering due to the scarcity experienced during the first wave of release for these figures.

Of course Nintendo has issued several statements from both its American and European divisions that confirm they’ll be restocking the supply after high demand, but given that these figures aren’t even available yet and they’re sold out means they could all be potentially hard to find once they are released and stores have sold through their initial stock.
