AMD’s quarterly report suggests multiple new consoles

It seems all but inevitable that Nintendo will debut the Nintendo NX console this year at E3, with further evidence from AMD’s quarterly call suggesting that multiple new consoles will launch this year, giving the microchip manufacturer a huge boost in business. The quarterly earnings call for AMD revealed record shipments for AMD’s chips powering the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, as well.

In our EESC segment, we had record shipments of our semi-custom SoCs powering the Playstation 4 and Xbox One game consoles.

Demand for game consoles looks strong for 2016 and we remain on track to generate additional revenue from new semi-custom business in the second half of 2016.

Game consoles — we see units going up 2016 to 2015. We’ve also said in the enterprise embedded and semi-custom segment that we will be ramping some new design revenue in the second half of 2016.

We have new products being introduced in both the businesses with the new design wins in the second half on the semi-custom side.

There are rumors that Sony will be launching a new version of the PlayStation 4 this year, dubbed the PlayStation 4K for now. Many expect Sony to unveil the refresh of the PlayStation 4 line this year at E3, so this will be an important year in this console cycle.
