Every year GDC asks attendees to complete a small survey on various hardware platforms and how likely they are to commit to a certain platform in developing their game. The survey reaches around 2,000 developers, from the single one person indie studio, all the way to a multi-national team of people working on a single project. The good news this year is that despite being fifth in the overall survey, the percentage of developers interested in developing for the Wii U has risen steadily since the console’s release in 2012.
This year 6% of developers in attendance answered that they anticipated releasing their next game on the Wii U. For comparison, that number was only about 4% last year, and only 4.6% in 2013. An additional 6% answered that they already have a game in development that will see release on the Wii U. So what are numbers like for the competition? Well, PC gaming is rapidly growing, with mobile dropping slightly into second place. 56% of attendees said the planned on releasing on PC, while 50% stated they would be releasing a mobile game.
In terms of other home consoles, PlayStation 4 took the lead with 29% of developers stating they would consider the console, while 24% said they were interested in bringing their game to the Xbox One.
While it’s clear the Wii U is behind when it comes to consideration for console games, the growth of the platform could see the Wii U breaking double digits next year in terms of developers interested in bringing games to the platform.
