Nintendo could be first to use Sharp’s new free-form screens

Last month in December, we reported news from a Japanese magazine that stated Sharp was working on free-form displays and that Nintendo could be the first customer for the company, using these displays in its upcoming hardware. No concrete examples were given, but according to Sankei Biz, the screens are supposed to be donut-shaped with a hole in the middle.

This week saw the kick off for CES, the largest consumer electronic show in the world and it just so happens we got a taste of the free-form displays that Sharp is showcasing. As you can see in the picture, the screen resembles something out of a sci-fi flick, as it molds around various knobs that are part of the device. Before now, screens were mostly rectangle. Speculation is abound in what Nintendo could do with these new devices, but given the donut shape it’s likely Nintendo is working on some sort of sleep tracker that will accompany their QoL platform.

The screens are scheduled to go into production in 2016.
