New Super Mario Bros. Wii was an interesting game, but given the Wii’s limited online capabilities, it’s no surprise that it was local multiplayer only. Despite that, these two guys have managed to create a working online multiplayer patch using actual real consoles, not emulated devices equipped with Dolphin Netplay.
According to the brothers, the mod works by sending a long stream of inputs over the internet and the assigned host dictates the RNG for items, while synchronising the level loads so that everyone plays the game at the same time. Check out the video above to see it in action.
Despite the mod being used on New Super Mario Bros. Wii to show that it does work, the brothers say their work is meant to be used as a generic patching engine that can be used to enable online multiplayer on multiple games.
Furthermore, this mod is not designed to be limited solely to New Super Mario Bros. Wii! It is designed to be a generic patching engine, which will hopefully work with multiple games that have local multiplayer available on them. The focus of this demo is NSMBW, though, just because the goal was originally to add it to this game; then we considered making it compatible with more!
While the mod is for Wii games, it’s still interesting to see people getting these games to work in ways that Nintendo never intended. What do you think of the mod?
