While multi-platform releases are common in the gaming world, it’s very rare that you see cross-platform play between systems. Games have traditionally been limited to the walled ecosystem they released on, so that Nintendo gamers play with other Nintendo gamers, while PlayStation gamers play with other PlayStation gamers.
This could be changing in the future though, as Pure Chess is one of the first titles to be released that will support cross-platform play between the Wii U, PlayStation 3, and Vita.
“We can confirm that cross-platform functionality is possible in certain titles that play on Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, as well as other video game systems not made by Nintendo. We are committed to helping developers realise the full potential of their software on Nintendo systems.”
Pure Chess is not the only title that will see this cross-platform play, as a Nintendo representative has confirmed that Disney Infinity and Cubeman 2 also benefit from cross-platform play. Pure Chess will be the first title to have cross-play with a rival platform if Sony agrees to the arrangement, as Disney Infinity only has mobile cross-platform.
