The Media Create numbers for this week in Japan are in, showing the Nintendo 3DS sold 159k units, while the Wii U sold only 5k units. The massive amount of sales for the Nintendo 3DS can be attributed to the recent release of Monster Hunter 4, but the bigger feat here is that the Nintendo 3DS has surpassed Wii sales in just 2.5 years.
The original Wii sold 12.6 million since its launch in 2006 in Japan, while the Nintendo 3DS has sold 12.7 million in just 2.5 years. That’s an impressive feat and speaks to the sheer amount of games that are available on Nintendo’s handheld console. We’d love to see the Wii U doing this well and hopefully now that Nintendo has turned the 3DS into a success story, we’ll see that same level of dedication with the Wii U.
