Playtonic working directly with Nintendo on Yooka-Laylee for Switch

Playtonic Games is slated to release Yooka-Laylee on April 11th for multiple platforms, but unfortunately Nintendo Switch owners will have to wait to get their hands on this classic throwback to the buddy platformer made popular in the Nintendo 64’s heyday.

That’s unfortunate since it’s Nintendo fans who helped propel the original Kickstarter for the game to success, but the delay shouldn’t be taken as a sign that Playtonic doesn’t care about Nintendo fans. In fact, in a recent interview the developers confirmed they’re working directly with Nintendo on this release.

Q: How are you approaching the Nintendo Switch? What would you expect in terms of success for this specific version?

It’s a bit too early to go into specifics with this version, but rest assured we’re working directly with Nintendo to get it out as soon as possible for our many fans and Kickstarter backers on that platform. We’re big Nintendo fans here, so it’s very exciting to be working on Nintendo Switch.

The team was also asked if they’d be open to re-creating the 3D buddy platformer feel for an already established franchise like Donkey Kong, Rayman, or even a return to the Banjo-Kazooie franchise. However, it doesn’t sound like that’s going to happen as the team said they’d rather focus on their own properties because you lose a bit of autonomy when you work with another company’s intellectual property.

Either way for fans of Yooka-Laylee, definitely check out the interview. Switch owners will have to wait to get their hands on the game, but given what big Nintendo fans all of the developers at Playtonic Games are, I expect the Nintendo Switch version will be well worth the wait.
