In it’s short lifespan of just a few months past a year, the Wii U has managed to outsell the Xbox 360 in Japan. The Xbox brand never really caught on in Japan, which is evidenced by the few hundred units sold week after week in the Media Create numbers. The Xbox One hasn’t launched in Japan yet, so it will be interesting to see how it performs in Japan once it is available. The Xbox One launch likely poses little threat in Japan, but the PlayStation 4 launches this month in the country. It will be interesting to see the first few weeks of sales for Sony’s new console.
Other good news concerning sales come from the Nintendo 3DS, which has sold 15 million united in Japan. That’s still around 5 million units shy of the sales achieved by the PSP in its lifetime, but considering the 3DS is only a few years old we’re pretty sure it will end up outselling Sony’s last generation portable. As for worldwide sales, the 3DS has reached 40 million units, with more than a quarter of them coming from the United States alone.
NDP numbers for the month of January haven’t been released yet, but when they are we’ll have a better idea how the Wii U did the first full month after the holiday season in North America.
