Bayonetta 2 is out today and one of the features of the game is several costumes included that are modeled after famous Nintendo characters. Princess Peach, Link, and Samus costumes are all available, with all three of them taking design cues from Bayonetta’s art style rather than staying true to the original conservative nature. How did this come about? Well, according to Siliconera it was Nintendo who asked Platinum to consider designing a Princess Peach costume for Bayonetta.

The above concept is the original artwork that was done to try and figure out what the Princess Peach costume should look like. Apparently Hideki Kamiya wanted to get it as close to Peach’s original outfit as possible, while still maintaining Bayonetta’s unique flair. One piece of feedback they got during the design work was that the Link costume was too conservative and could be more revealing, which is why this particular costume shows more of Bayonetta’s chest than a similar one would on Link.

Thanks to Nintendo’s willingness to adapt to the chosen art style, these unique costumes capture the spirit of the original characters, while keeping Bayonetta’s flair for the extravagant intact. What do you think of the designs? If you want to see more of the original concept artwork, check it out on Siliconera.
