"hyrule-warriors-footage"

We’re barreling toward the launch of Hyrule Warriors, and many of you are likely looking for reviews to help you make an informed purchase decision. Thankfully we didn’t have to put up with any lengthy embargo nonsense — the reviews are already beginning to roll in.

The game is being received fairly well for the most part, though no one publication seems to be totally in love with it. The game is pulling in a multitude of 7/10 and 8/10 scores, which is still well above average. Many of the games cite its hack-and-slash, Dynasty Warriors-esque gameplay as reasons why they aren’t totally enthralled, but say the ultimate polish of the game, the sizable roster of characters and its roots in the Zelda universe make it an experience you’ll still want to check out.

The game did receive some harsh marks from Polygon and Gamesradar — namely because they think it’s a shallow experience using a formula that’s been done into the ground — though it’s never a good idea to take just one reviewer’s take as gospel. Heck, it’s never a good idea to take any review as gospel. Read them all, and more importantly be sure to try the game yourself (perhaps with a rental or by making it easier on your wallet with a deal or two) if you want a better idea of what to expect.

It all makes you wonder what kind of reception the game would garner had it come as a traditional Zelda-like game. That scenario was almost a reality at one point in time, though Zelda mastermind Miyamoto decided he didn’t want the game to take that form.

Here’s an early list of scores from some of the more reputable outlets out there:
